School Of Linguistics And Nigerian Languages

MISSION, VISION AND OBJECTIVES

The Department of Linguistics and Nigerian languages is a Department in the School of Arts, National Institute for Nigerian Languages, Aba, an Institute established and backed up legally by an Act of parliament to achieve amongst other things; the following: 

  1. To run a-4 year degree programmes on Nigerian Languages 
  2. Promote the study of Nigerian Languages
  3. Generate specialists of L1 and L2 teachers on Nigerian Languages
  4. Bridge the gaps in the regular University programmes
  5. Produce development status for NCE holders in Nigerian Languages who would have been stranded, with no University to advance their L2 training
  6. Skip the huddles of the quota limitation in University admission
  7. Vacation/ in-service training courses.

More Details

To be qualified for any of the programmes in the Department, candidates must have five credit passes in WASC, SSCE, NECO, NABTEB, GCE O/L or its equivalent in not more than two settings. Candidates who do not have the required credits will be allowed to remedy their deficiency before graduation.

There are 27 academic staff, and two non-teaching/supporting staff in the Department

The Department runs conferences, workshops, organizes competitions in the indigenous languages, etc, as well as carryout researches and publishes its findings in indigenous languages.

  • The Department alongside with the Executive Director and the Institute Liberian has won the prestigious lacuna grant fund for the year 2022.
  • The Department also has a unique outfit {polo and muffler} with the inscription: My Language My Heritage
  1. That the Government should assist the Department in realizing her Mandate to run 4yrs degree programme in Nigerian languages.
  2. Educational bodies such as NCCE, NUC, JAMB to assist the Department with students in realising her MANDATE
